Meredith Thompson
Expressive Arts Therapist, Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying), MA, BEd, BFA (Dance)Biography
I am a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) and Expressive Arts Therapist with more than 25 years of experience working with children, youth, teens and families across educational, community, arts and clinical settings. I am also a dance artist, educator and art-based facilitator. Movement and creativity have been central to my work throughout my career.
My path to therapy has grown from this longstanding connection to movement, creativity, embodiment and the many ways people express themselves and make meaning. I believe creativity can support resilience, connection and healing, particularly when experiences are difficult to put into words. Art, movement, imagination and other creative practices can offer additional ways to explore, process, and communicate what is happening, and to imagine new possibilities.
I offer a warm, grounded, and caring approach to therapy. My work is collaborative and relational, with an emphasis on creating a space where people feel seen, heard, and respected. I am particularly interested in the wisdom of the body, our relationship with the natural world, and the power of human connection. Through this lens, I support clients in developing greater awareness of their feelings, experiences, strengths, and resources to foster resilience, support healing, and cultivate a greater sense of aliveness.
I have experience supporting individuals and groups navigating grief and bereavement, serious illness, family violence, anxiety, life transitions and other difficult experiences. I have worked with children and young people of diverse abilities and backgrounds, as well as caregivers, families and adults, through clinical, community and arts-based settings including Hospice Toronto, the People With AIDS Foundation, the YWCA and Child Development Institute.
I hold a Master of Arts in Expressive Arts Therapy from the European Graduate School in Switzerland, an Expressive Arts Therapy Diploma from The CREATE Institute in Toronto, and Bachelor of Fine Arts (Dance) and Bachelor of Education degrees from York University.
My practice is collaborative, ethical and anti-oppressive. I strive to create accessible and welcoming spaces that respect each person’s identity, needs, experiences and ways of being. I aim to work at a pace that feels comfortable for each person, with attention to safety, choice, relationship and the resources they already carry.
