Biography

As a mother and artist educator, Sofia focuses her work predominantly around early learning and motherhood. Sofia is proud of her background as an immigrant and is extremely familiar with the hardships immigrant families endure as newcomers. Born in Caracas, Venezuela into a creative family who raised her surrounded by dance, Sofia draws inspiration from her culture for her work and her approach to Art. From an early age she trained in Latin American and Venezuelan traditional dance as well as Bellydance. Her mother, who practised Psychopedagogy inspired her to pursue a career in service of children. Sofia went on to study Psychology with a focus on Developmental and Social Psychology at Simon Fraser University. Here she spent time working within the REWE Close Relationships Laboratory and volunteered her time as a production technician and assistant for various productions in SFU’s school for Contemporary Arts, while also training in Theatre Production. Once her University studies were completed she moved on to a Graduate Certification in Expressive Arts therapy from Langara College which led her to pursue a Master of Arts in Expressive Arts Therapy from The European Graduate School in Saas Fee, Switzerland. Sofia has worked for over 8 years in early childhood arts programming, teaching visual arts and creative dance with Arts Umbrella, City of Port Moody as well as independently. She’s also worked closely with neurodiverse youth in Kitsilano Secondary under the life skills program, as well as recovering youth in Westminster House supervised by fellow therapist Dale Costanzo during her practicum year as a Student Therapist.  Sofia has shared her artistic abilities through contracts for the City of Coquitlam as a Cultural Ambassador and Dancer, DAREarts as an Artists Educator; as well as other cultural organisations such as North Shore Folkfest Society, The Venezuelan Canadian Society of BC, Latincouver and The Canadian Iranian Foundation through AMED Dance Academy. Sofia remains active in the local dance community, teaching Bellydance and Reggaeton with World Dance Co and SFU Recreation. You can also find her performing Venezuelan Traditional Dances around Vancouver or selling her paintings at local shops like Willow and Wallflower in Port Moody, BC.
