Definition

Expressive Arts Therapy is a form of psychotherapy that engages the client in a process of open-ended play using the arts interchangeably in order to reconnect with one’s self and with the world. The Expressive Arts Therapist uses kinetic, audial, visual, musical and language arts-based interventions to assist the client into, and out of, a liminal state of exploration. The arts provide an objective container for exploring personal issues outside the body. The method includes sensing, experiencing, reconstructing, validating and evaluating. Spontaneously building on what presents itself with each activity suggests the next to create a structure. The therapist and client pursue curiosity in order to find surprises in the arts. Through the simple process of expressing oneself creatively in the presence of another, the arts can offer new insights to problems, offer alternate ways of being with people, bring to light otherwise hidden internal resources.
